Nintendo has given us our first look at the next generation of Pokémon games today. The newest titles are Pokémon Sword and Pokémon Shield. They will be the first mainline Pokémon games to be released on a home console, specifically the Nintendo Switch. While not much was showcased in terms of new features being implemented, fans of the series did get a sneak peek into the new starter Pokémon featured in the game along with the new region that players will be exploring. Pokémon Sword and Shield take place in the new Galar region. It was described during today’s Nintendo Direct by the developers as an expansive region with “idyllic countryside[s], contemporary cities, thick forests, and craggy, snow-covered mountains.” The region also has a whole bunch of new Pokémon, including three new starters: Grookey, Scorbunny, and Sobble.
Additionally, it was announced that with this entry that gyms will be a return to form after Pokémon Sun and Moon stepped away from the traditional gym battles.
Pokémon Sword and Shield are slated for a late fall 2019 release which is similar to previous Pokémon titles. It’s been three years since Pokémon Sun and Moon were released for the 3DS. It’s time for another Pokémon release.
