Let’s face it. Sony hasn’t done the best job with the Spider-Man properties over the past few years. Spider-Man 3 was a train wreck and the Andrew Garfield reboots were forgettable. But thanks to Marvel getting the rights to use Spider-Man in its movies, new life has been breathed into the Spiderverse.
Marvel fans have been cautiously anticipating a trailer of the Ruben Fleischer directed upcoming Venom film starring Tom Hardy. Would Sony be able to make the movie a success without Marvel’s involvement? Would they do the characters justice the way that the MCU does? At this point, I’m going with no to both questions.
The first Venom trailer dropped earlier today and we see a lot of Tom Hardy doing… stuff. I’m not really sure what most of it is, but at one point, it looks like he has telekinesis. What the heck is that!? I haven’t read every Venom storyline, but I’m pretty sure that telekinesis isn’t one of his powers. We get no glimpse of what Venom actually looks like. And the trailer failed to invoke excitement for the film’s release. It was bland, boring, and didn’t tell us anything other than Tom Hardy will be doing stuff in a movie.
Eventually, Sony will release another trailer that hopefully won’t be a minute and a half of disappointment. Until then, dry those tears Venom fans and know that Spider-Man will be back on the big screen in Avengers: Infinity War.
Venom hits theaters October 5, 2018.
