Disney+ Already Has 10 Million Subscribers

Since Disney+ launched early Tuesday morning, the streaming service has already seen 10 million new users sign up. This is in spite of technical difficulties that prevented many users, myself included, from accessing the content. However, customers were apparently still able to access the sign-up page.

How many of these users stick around though remains to be seen. Disney is currently offering a seven-day free trial to entice users to sign up for the service so it’s possible that there will be some drop-off. But with a price tag of $6.99 per month or $69.99 per year, Disney+ is a great value and is significantly cheaper than competitors such as Netflix, which charges $12.99 for its most popular standard HD plan so it’s possible that may will stay.

Also to consider is the fact that Verizon is currently offering customers a free year of Disney+. It is unclear if these accounts, or customers who signed up for the service before launch are included in the 10 million.

That said, when compared with other streaming services, Disney+ appears to have had a pretty successful launch. To put it in perspective, Netflix recently reported 158 million subscribers. Keep in mind though that this represents its total audience. The service began offering streaming in 2007 and it has worldwide availability. Disney+ has launched in only a few markets, including the U.S., Canada, and the Netherlands.

What makes this even more impressive is it took CBS about five years to hit 8 million streaming subscribers between both CBS All Access and Showtime. Disney managed to surpass that number in a little over a day!

I don’t think anybody is declaring the streaming wars won after only a few days, but it’s clear that Disney is going to be a force to reckon with.
