They’re Making a Movie Based on Who?

If you’ve paid attention to this blog over the years, or checked out any of our podcasts, then you probably know that I’m a bit of a geek when it comes to comic books.  As I see it, you have three kinds of comic book geeks: those that read the Marvel Universe, those that read the DC Universe, and those who will read anything.  While I think that I fall into the third category, I’ve always had an affinity for the DC Universe.  Like most kids, I started reading Superman comics and then discovered the awesomeness of Batman.  Before long, I was reading any DC comic that I could get my hands on including the characters that weren’t considered cool.

I told you that, so that I could tell you this: DC and Warner Bros. are allegedly making a Hawkman movie.

While I’m still holding out hope for films based on characters that I really like, such as The Flash, I’m very pleased at the thought of a Hawkman film.  I wasn’t asking for this movie to be made (was anybody?), but since it’s been announced, I think it’s a great idea.  In fact, the more I think about it, the more I love a Hawkman movie.  Despite not being one of the more well-known characters in the DC Universe, I think that this could actually be a really good movie if DC does it right.

For those who watched Smallville, you know that Hawkman was given some love during the final two seasons.  Michael Shanks was amazing as Carter Hall.  While I’m almost 100% sure it won’t happen, I would love to see him reprise the role on the big screen especially since I’m pretty confident that the film will use the non-alien version of Hawkman, Carter Hall, as opposed to one of the other iterations.

Here is the official premise of the film:

Part INDIANA JONES/DA VINCI CODE, part GHOST tentpole about the fictional superhero that appears in D.C. Comic books. He used archaic weaponry and large, artificial wings attached to a harness made of the Nth metal that allows flight. Most incarnations of Hawkman work closely with a partner/romantic interest named Hawkgirl or Hawkwoman in his fight against supervillains. Based on the DC comic.

Other than that, there’s not much information about the movie at this point.  It’s Hollywood so we all know there has to be a love interest; Hawkman’s mythos has one already built in so the Ghost comparison makes sense to me.  The Indiana Jones thing has my interest piqued and, considering the ancient Egyptian lore that plays into the character’s story, this should be a fun movie.

I hope though that DC can do with Hawkman what Marvel did with Thor: take a cool character that’s not really mainstream and make a great movie that will eventually lead into an amazing Justice League film.  With rumors of Flash and Wonder Woman films in the works, new Batman and Superman movies coming out next year, and Green Lantern coming out in a couple of weeks, it looks like DC may have pulled their heads out and realized that they have some great characters that will make for great movies.  They better not disappoint or nerd rage levels could reach unprecedented levels.
