When Warner Bros. and DC announced that they were making a stand-alone Joker film, I wasn’t sure that was a good idea. DC has been moving away from Zack Snyder’s dark and gritty style, and I wasn’t sure we needed Joker origin story. But once the cast was announced with names like Joaquin Phoenix, Robert De Niro, Zazie Beetz, Bill Camp, Frances Conroy, Marc Maron, and Shea Whigham, my mind started to change. The film is being promoted as a character study about a mentally ill individual, and not the typical comic book movie. The marketing team says “The exploration of Arthur Fleck (Joaquin Phoenix), a man disregarded by society, is not only a gritty character study but also a broader cautionary tale.”

The first poster is below, and I am intrigued. The teaser trailer will be out tomorrow and the film arrives in theaters on October 4, 2019.
