The Hollywood Reporter broke the news late yesterday that everyone’s favorite Jedi Master turned crazy old hermit, Obi-Wan Kenobi, is probably his own stand-alone film. I say probably because, even though it’s been rumored that this would be happening for a while, we still have no confirmation from Disney or Lucasfilm.
They are reporting that Stephen Daldry, the Oscar-nominated director behind Billy Elliot and The Hours, is in early talks to take on a stand-alone Star Wars movie centering on Obi-Wan Kenobi. Sources say talks are at the earliest of stages and that the project has no script. If a deal is made, Daldry would oversee the development and writing with Lucasfilm higher-ups.
The Obi-Wan Kenobi movie is one of several projects currently in development by Lucasfilm and Disney that do not take place within the trilogies telling the saga of the Skywalker family. Ron Howard is currently directing the final stages of shooting a Han Solo movie, and rumors are also circulating regarding movies focused on Yoda, Boba Fett, and more.
There is no word on a release date, or casting announcements; however, if Ewan McGregor is not cast as the lead, millions of voices will suddenly cry out in terror. Seriously, I know that Disney is trying to distance themselves from the prequel trilogy, but Ewan McGregor is the only logical choice to play the part of Obi-Wan. Especially if the movie is set between Revenge of the Sith and A New Hope. Am I wrong? Tell me why in the comments below!
