Say this with me… Naughty dive monkeys deserve to be punished… and also shamed. Prepare yourself for the onslaught of mispronunciations that are about to arrive in team chat. Brigitte (pronounced Bri-gee-ta) is here! Well, for those who play on Blizzard’s PTR anyhow. Today, Jeff Kaplan made the official announcement during a developer update and covered the basics of how the hero will fit into the gameplay and lore. Here are a few things to consider before judging this book by its highly armored cover.

She’s not a tank: While her super cool mini Crusader look had me fooled at first, Brigitte actually fits into the support role. She does have a shield, but it’s for more self-preservative purposes. She will heal and over-heal (via armor) her allies through a combination of abilities. This will include a HoT generated by melee damage and an armor pack cool-down applied with a soft targeting reticle. Still, it’s hard to consider her a pure support and is definitely more of a hybrid hero.

Brigitte just might hard counter Gengi and Tracer: Flank mains beware; a good Brigitte is probably going to eat you. The Hero is capable of having a health pool, including self-applied armor, of well above the 200 support standard. The Armor itself will make her a difficult dive target for Tracer and Winston to melt through. This is before considering her shield. Although, due to the nature of her kit, she probably won’t be in the back lines behaving like peanut butter scented bait anyway.

Not as good as she sounds?: The timing of the Brigitte announcement is interesting because it just happens to follow substantial buffs coming to Sombra’s kit. There’s going to be a Brigitte in every match and a Sombra to shut her down. It will be interesting to see if she has her time to shine before cries for buffs are made on the Blizzard forums. If the improved hack’s effect on Lucio is any indication, Sombra may have the ability to all but completely destroy Brigitte and her AoE/HoT heal, not to mention the rest of her ability dependent kit.

Blizzard has detailed Brigitte as follows:

The daughter of weapons designer, Torbjörn Lindholm, Brigitte was the first of his children to show an interest in mechanical engineering. Brigitte spent much of her spare time in her father’s workshop, learning the trade and honing her skills. Her aptitude for engineering mirrored that of her father’s, but Brigitte’s primary interest was in armor fabrication and defensive systems, unlike Torbjörn, who was world renowned (and perhaps infamous) for the weapons he created.

Brigitte specializes in armor and defense. She can throw Repair Packs to heal teammates, or automatically heal nearby allies when she damages foes with her Flail. Her Flail is capable of a wide swing to strike multiple targets, or a Whip Shot that stuns an enemy at range. When entering the fray, Barrier Shield provides personal defense while she attacks enemies with Shield Bash. Brigitte’s ultimate ability, Rally, gives her a substantial short-term boost of speed and provides long-lasting armor to all her nearby allies.

I for one will undoubtedly be reaching for my flail, charging up my shield, and bashing everything in sight very soon. Oh, while of course… ahem… bringing team support and utility to the rest of my team. Brigitte seems to fit as missing link for players like me, who have been craving a frontline tanky healer for quite some time.
