Variety reports that Robert Pattinson is in negotiations to play the lead role in Matt Reeves’ upcoming superhero film, The Batman. Warner Bros. isn’t commenting on the report; however, sources are saying that Pattinson is the top choice and that the deal is expected to be finalized soon.

As one might expect, there is a lot of fan backlash over this casting rumor. Multiple petitions have already popped up voicing displeasure. One urges Warner Bros. “Don’t make the Batfleck mistake again,” while another asks fans to help stop Warner Bros.’ plans, calling the casting a “complete joke” and “the worst casting ever” for the Dark Knight.

Of course, with the deal not being finalized, there is still room for other names to be thrown into the ring. Deadline is reporting that Nicholas Hoult of X-Men: First Class fame is still in the running to play the Caped Crusader.

Reeves assumed Batman directing duties from Ben Affleck in January 2017 and has been developing the project ever since. Pre-production is expected to begin sometime this summer with filming starting in late 2019 or early 2020.

The Batman is currently scheduled to hit theaters June 25, 2021.
