With the success of Captain Marvel over the weekend and Marvel just having released a new trailer for Avengers: Endgame, fans apparently can’t get enough. So here’s a bit more for you. The director for Doctor Strange 2, Scott Derrickson recently teased Namor’s introduction into the Marvel Cinematic Universe. In a Tweet that has since been deleted, Derrickson decided to share a picture of Dr. Strange and Namor taken from the cover of Fear Itself: The Deep #1 from 2011 with the caption “Are You Experienced?”

Fear Itself: The Deep #1

A lot of people took this to mean that Namor will be in the next Doctor Strange movie. And why not? DC had a ton of success with Aquaman. Now seems like the perfect time for Marvel to bring their own prince of Atlantis to the big screen.

If only it were so simple.

Marvel Studios boss Kevin Feige has previously talked about his desire to put Namor in an MCU project. However, Marvel sold the rights to the character in the 1990s to Universal. They have since acquired the rights, but there are still some… issues. Feige addressed the situation last year amid rumors that Namor would appear in the sequel to Black Panther.

“Let’s put it this way – there are entanglements that make it less easy. There are older contracts that still involve other parties that mean we need to work things out before we move forward on it. As opposed to an Iron Man or any of the Avengers or any of the other Marvel characters where we could just put them in.”

Sure. It’s possible that Scott Derrickson was hinting that Namor will be making his MCU debut in Doctor Strange 2. At the very least though, I think we can say that it looks like he’s closer than ever to joining the MCU.
