Aquaman was one of the better movies in what was the DCEU. While I liked Man of Steel and Batman v. Superman, they both felt like something was… off. Don’t get me wrong, they were fun movies. They just weren’t what I had hoped for.
Then we got Suicide Squad, Wonder Woman, and Justice League. Again, I liked all three of them. In fact, I LOVED Wonder Woman. I thought it was nearly perfect and it far exceeded my expectations which only made Justice League so much… sadder? Justice League was just okay. Not great. But the fact that Wonder Woman was so good and Justice League wasn’t amazing left everyone confused as to what to expect from Aquaman when it hit theaters last year.
Side note: I’m a big Aquaman fan. I have been for years. I had very high expectations going into the movie and I was not disappointed.
The fact that Aquaman grossed more than $1.3 billion globally tells me that Warner Bros. and DC were not disappointed either. In fact, The Hollywood Reporter is reporting that Warner Bros. announced on Wednesday that Aquaman 2 will be swimming back into theaters on December 16, 2022. And since no other movie has claimed that far-off date, I predict that Aquaman 2 will win the box office that weekend.
Jason Momoa is expected to return in the title role. Also, David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick, who co-wrote the first film, has officially signed on for the sequel.
James Wan is currently working on a deal to return as producer, as is Peter Safran; however, it is unclear whether or not Wan will return as the film’s director.
There’s a lot of time between now and then, and a lot can change. If the past few years of DC’s movie lineup is any indication, it probably will. We’ll keep you posted as new information becomes available.
